Pablo Picasso war 73 Jahre alt, als er in jenem Winter in Auseinandersetzung mit Eugène Delacroix‘ "Die Frauen von Algier" (1834, 1849) und Werken von Henri Matisse wie "Odaliske mit roter Hose" (1924/25) das einzigartige Ensemble von fünfzehn Ölgemälden, gut hundert Zeichnungen und Lithographien in nur drei Monaten schuf. Der üppig illustrierte Band stellt neben dem Zyklus auch dessen Vorbilder und Rezeption vor. Neben einem Auszug von Leo Steinbergs berühmten Essay "The Algerian Women and Picasso At Large" von 1972 befasst sich das Buch auch mit der Rezeption der Serie in Algerien. Der Katalog ist dreisprachig - Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch.
