James Simon (1851-1932) gehörte zu den herausragenden Stiftern und Mäzenen im Berlin der Kaiserzeit. Als erfolgreicher Textilkaufmann wurde er zu einem der reichsten Männer Deutschlands, der einen Großteil seiner Mittel dort einsetzte, wo gesellschaftliche Defizite vorlagen - im sozialen Bereich. Berühmt wurde Simon jedoch durch sein einzigartiges Engagement für die Berliner Museen. Seine langjährigen Beziehungen zu deren späterem Generaldirektor Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929) waren dabei ausschlaggebend. Seine umfangreiche und vielfältige Kunstsammlung, die er mit Bodes Hilfe aufbaute, schenkte er später zu wesentlichen Teilen den Berliner Museen. Die von 1185 bis 1927 überlieferten Briefe von Simon an Bode berichten detailreich über Kunstwerke und deren Erwerbung. Sie illustrieren zugleich über 40 Jahre preußische und Berliner Geistes- und Museumsgeschichte.
