The Piranesi Principle

The Piranesi Principle

Herausgeber: Moritz Wullen; Georg Schelbert

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) was a universal genius of the 18th century. He made an international career as an archaeologist, artist , architect, collector, art dealer, designer, publisher, author and a temperamental polemicist. His principle of success was to grasp reality with its ideas, things, and situations and to transform it into something new. Everything became an inspiration for him: the arts of distant epochs and regions, images from sciences, technology, opera and theater, the paper waste of his own workshop, even abuses and defeats. The catalog for the exhibition on the occasion of his 300th birthday brings this Piranesi princiole back to life in all its creativity. The focus is on the great treasures of the Kunstbibliothek and the Kupferstichkabinett: Piranesi's master engravings and monumental books, polemic writings, satirical pictures, and hand drawings never shown before.
