Imi Knoebel: Help, oh, help...

Imi Knoebel: Help, oh, help...

Herausgeber: Eugen Blume

The German artist Imi Knoebel (born 1940) ranks as one of the most internationally renowned abstract artists. Ever since his earliest works in the nineteen-sixties and in his subsequent pictures and installations, Knoebel treads a fine line between the realms of painting and sculpture. In 2009, Imi Knoebel created an impressive total work of art in the upper hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie built by Mies van der Rohe, which in its formal radicalism was not self-sufficient, but has proven to be a sculpture for the future in its dimensionality. The real dimension of the space became visible only through its seclusion, the energy was directed inward, and everything in it became not only invariably significant, but part of a sculpture, of a total work of art. At night, the entire room of the upper hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie radiated from the inside out. Through the whitewashed glass walls he became a mysterious giant lantern in the urban space, whose light seemed to be the indefinable darkness of the future and still gave it an enlightening outline.
