Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode Museum

Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode Museum

Herausgeber: Julien Chapuis; Jonathan Fine; Paola Ivanov

Mythical heroes and spiritual ancestors from the Congo stand tall, despite the weight of their ordeals. Their presence in the galleries of the Bode Museum raises the question: Why does Christianity need a suffering God? Bronze sculptures from Italy and the kingdom of Benin reflect the artistic exchange and trade between Europe and Africa. Until the opening of the Humboldt Forum, some eighty masterpieces of African sculpture will set foot on Museum Island to engage European works of art in dialogue. Experimental juxtapositions and groupings according to themes such as the "others", aesthetics, gender, protection, performance, and death, reveal connections and differences. New perspectives on both collections emerge by presenting these sculptures with different histories together.
