Wie kaum ein anderer verstand er es, die herausragende Stellung des Hofbildhauers mit unternehmerischem Erfolg und einer soliden bürgerlichen Existenz zu verbinden und dabei ein internationales Netzwerk zu pflegen. Der Künstler selbst modellierte, zeichnete, schrieb kunsttheoretische Traktate und leitete die Berliner Akademie, eine der bedeutendsten Kunsthochschulen seiner Zeit. Der monografische Band eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf das virtuose Schaffen des großen Bildhauers und seine Werkstatt.
