John Flaxman ist ein Künstler, der heute außerhalb Großbritanniens wenig bekannt ist - eine erstaunliche Tatsache angesichts der faszinierend mannigfaltigen Palette seines künstlerischen Schaffens und seiner grundlegenden Bedeutung für die Entwicklung des Klassizismus. Durch eine glückliche Fügung erhielt die Berliner Skulpturensammlung das Relief der »Anbetung« als Leihgabe und konnte dies mit den Werken von Masaccio und Donatello in Verbindung setzen. Darüber hinaus werden zwei andere Aspekte in Flaxmans Werk gezeigt: seine Entwürfe für den Steinguthersteller Josiah Wedgwood und seine Rolle als Illustrator
