Die neuartigen Zusammenschlüsse von Künstler:innen in Secessionen bedeuteten die Abkehr von althergebrachten Künstlervereinigungen und überkommenen Strukturen hin zu neuer künstlerischer Freiheit. Die bedeutendsten Secessionen im deutschsprachigen Raum entstanden 1892 in München, 1897 in Wien und 1899 in Berlin und sind bis heute mit ihren prägenden Figuren Franz von Stuck, Gustav Klimt und Max Liebermann verbunden. Der Band veranschaulicht die künstlerische Vielfalt in über 200 Werken von rund 80 Künstler:innen der Secessionen in Wien, München und Berlin sowie von internationalen Gästen wie Hodler, Munch, Rodin, Segantini oder Toorop.
